Poondu Kuzhambu is a tangy and definitely a very flavorful recipe from Chettinad cuisine. This delicious curry is one of our most favorite.

For Roasting & Grinding:
- 1 tbsp Coriander Seeds / Malli
- 5 to 7 Dry Red Chillies
- 1 tbsp Chana Dal / Kadalai Paruppu
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp Vendayam / Methi
- 1 tsp Oil
Soak tamarind in some water for 15 mins. Squeeze and strain the pulp.
Heat a tsp of oil in a kadai. Add in all the roasting ingredients and saute till golden. Remove it in a blender and grind it till smooth.
Heat 3 tblspn oil in a kadai. Add in mustard seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and saute for a min.
Add in shallots, garlic and saute for a min.
Add in tomatoes and cook till it gets mushy.
Add in the ground masala and salt. Cook till raw smell leaves away.
Pour in tamarind juice and some water if needed.
Bring this to a boil, cover and simmer till oil separates.
Now add in some sugar and mix well.
Serve over rice.
